Rob Rosenthal:
What should you do if you have a Wright Medical proFemur replacement hip but haven't experienced problems? We ask Colorado attorney George McLaughlin for this AskTheLawyers™ Quick Question.
George McLaughlin:
Well, they should talk to their surgeon to find out if they in fact have the proFemur or titanium long neck, because if they do they really just need to be careful. You don't want to put yourself in a situation where if your leg suddenly broke—and you don't feel it coming, you don't have any pain before boom, it just suddenly snaps. There's another problem though with the proFemur necks; if you see this, it's kind of got some dark grayish marks—it should be uniform in color. The cobalt chrome necks are corroding in the stem, and sometimes that corrosion leads to a bodily reaction that necessitates the removal of the hip stem. You can find out if you're having excessive corrosion by getting blood tests done by your orthopedic surgeon's office to monitor your cobalt and chromium levels.
