Video Transcript:

Severe weather is being blamed for a devastating auto crash in Alabama that left 10 people dead.

I’m Rob Rosenthal and this is an AskTheLawyers Legal Brief.

The crash involved 18 vehicles and killed 10 people, including 9 children. It happened on Father’s day weekend on I-65. A Butler County, Alabama sheriff called it the most horrific accident in Butler County History.

Wet roads from Tropical Storm Claudette may have played a role in the chain-reaction accident, which began when two 18-wheelers crashed and sandwiched a bus from the Tuscaloosa County Girls Ranch between them. Eight children on the bus were killed, and two others, a father and his young daughter, died when their SUV overturned.

Attorney Sara Williams is an injury lawyer with Alexander Shunnarah Injury Attorneys based in Birmingham, Alabama. She said that it will likely take some time before the true cause of the crash is determined. She says quote:

“There are always so many factors in multi-vehicle crashes like this, especially when 18-wheelers are involved. Did the drivers make a mistake? Were the vehicles up to code? Was the road slippery, and did the drivers drive appropriately for the weather conditions? Were the brakes faulty? If so, who was responsible for their upkeep? Only a very thorough investigation can reveal what happened.”

The National Transportation Safety Board said it is working with the Alabama Highway Patrol to investigate the cause of the accident.
