Rob Rosenthal:

Do you know how you can afford a lawyer after you've been injured in a serious crash? Let's ask Utah lawyer Kevin Swenson for this Ask the Lawyers Quick Question.

Kevin Swenson:

Yeah, so if somebody's been injured, it's a pretty tough time for them, if they're incurring medical expenses, they may be losing wages, and then the idea of hiring an attorney may seem overwhelming, and under our system, there are kinda two ways that you can hire an attorney. You can do what the big companies do and just hire them and pay them an hourly rate, and as they work on it, every bill you get a month... Every month you get a bill for the work that's being done, or the other option is you hire somebody on a contingency fee basis, and that's somebody who will come in, step in, work the case, and then take a percentage of it on the back end. Now, they have to believe in the case and they have to think it's a good case, or they're not gonna spend their energy and their time on that, but if they do, they become a partner with you and really getting after and getting that compensation that the injured person deserves.
