Why I Practice Family Law

Video Transcript:

Jillian French:

I am actually one of the few born and raised in Austin. I grew up in South Austin and went to Bowie High School. I get that question a lot; where did I go to high school? I then went to college in Austin as well. I went to St. Edwards University which is a local private school here, and I ventured out of Austin very briefly for law school; I went to law school in Fort Worth and then immediately came back.

The path that actually took me to it is I have a mentally disabled sister, and when I was in elementary school she could not go to the same elementary school as I could. At the time, they were funneling all of the special ed kids to one school, which wasn't necessarily conveniently located for all parents throughout the school district. There were a lot of parents that got together to force them to have the programs in each school; that did happen, and that just got me interested in, “Oh, wow. This person was brought in to help them.” Ever since then I decided I wanted to be a lawyer.

I realized early on that I really liked going to court—the excitement of it, the resolution that you get, having a final resolution to something—and I decided that I wanted to stick with family law.
