Car Accident Lawyer Grant Lawson Says: Don’t Trust It

Rob Rosenthal:

If you get a settlement offer from the insurance company after you've been injured, should you accept it? That's what we ask Wyoming attorney Grant Lawson in this AskTheLawyers™ Quick Question.

Grant Lawson:

If you're dealing with an insurance company on your own with no attorney, you can be guaranteed that their only interest is trying to save money. So if you're going to settle out with an insurance company, you have to feel like it's the best possible outcome for you; because that is 100% their role in this world, to save money and not give up money to people who have been hurt.

So, to settle your case without attorney involvement, there's a lot of risk. Now, when you are talking about having an attorney involved in a lawsuit or pre-lawsuit, there are a lot of settlements that occur prior to filing a case and going into a lawsuit. Those are usually cases in which attorneys negotiate with the insurance company and there's a fair amount of information exchanged regarding medical expenses, wage losses, injuries, and the damages combined to reach a fair resolution.
