Attorney Kathy McArthur partnered with a community leader to figure out how they could contribute to coronavirus relief in the Macon-Bibb area of Georgia. They decided to focus on providing aid to small businesses struggling to meet payroll in the midst of the current health crisis. In less than two weeks from creating the fund, 167 applications were received and over $100,000 was raised to help these small businesses, and money has continued to be donated since. In fact, the Macon bar trial lawyers alone have donated over $60,000.
The Macon 30 Day Fund is designed to offer small businesses forgivable loans of up to $3,000. This money does not need to be paid back, unless the business wants to pay that favor forward in the future by donating back to the fund. However, for a small business to qualify for aid from the Macon 30 Day Fund they must have a Macon-Bibb county business license, a main office in Macon-Bibb, and the owner of the business must be a resident of Macon-Bibb county. The Macon 30 Day Fund is a very focused community effort designed to provide local relief.
The Macon 30 Day Fund is currently seeking non-profit tax status, but this process is often time-consuming and the rewards of this won’t be able to be reaped for some time.
