Austin Attorney Erin Leake Recommends Consulting With a Lawyer

Video Transcript:

Rob Rosenthal:

Do you need an attorney to file for divorce or can you handle it yourself? We asked Austin attorney Erin Leake in this AskTheLawyers™ Quick Question.

Erin Leake:

I would recommend that you hire an attorney to get divorced; there are few circumstances where you may be able to do it yourself, but those are few and far between. If you own property, you're going to need to hire an attorney. If you have any sort of retirement account, you're going to have to hire an attorney. I would suggest it if you're going to be dealing with any children issues; it would be wise to have an attorney. I have personally dealt and attempted to fix problems in divorces where people have tried to do it themselves and they weren't done properly, and that’s hard to do. It's hard to go back and fix those issues that they weren't done correctly the first time.
