Do I Need a Workers’ Comp Lawyer?

Atlanta Attorney Sarah Stottlemyer Cautions Against Handling Claim Yourself

Video Transcript:

Rob Rosenthal:

Do you know why you shouldn't try to handle that workers’ comp claim without a lawyer? We ask Atlanta attorney Sarah Stottlemyer in this AskTheLawyers™ Quick Question.

Sarah Stottlemyer:

I wouldn't recommend trying to do that. Unfortunately, there's probably somewhere around 70% of injured workers that do handle workers’ comp claims on their own. The goal of the Workers’ Comp Act is simply if you get hurt on the job, to pay for the medical treatment, to pay for a portion of your lost wages and get you back to work. However, a lot of times you're unable to do the job that you were able to do prior to your work-related injury. In those cases, you absolutely want to have an attorney because they're going to make sure that they get the largest value for their client possible.
