Do Crime Victims Need a Personal Injury Attorney?

Oakland Lawyer Explains How a PI Attorney Can Help

Video Transcript:

Rob Rosenthal:

If you're a victim of crime, how does a personal injury attorney help you? We ask California attorney Richard Richardson in this AskTheLawyers™ Quick Question.

Richard Richardson:

You're injured, and as part of a criminal case sometimes you seek restitution from the person who has either stolen something from you or a person who could have injured you while driving under the influence. So in an effort to make people whole, you have to find out ways to repay their doctor's bills, ambulance bills, hospital bills, treatment bills for physical therapy that go on after the incident has been resolved. So those are all things that as a civil litigation attorney, you learn to look deeper into; you learn how to quantify; you learn how to speak to experts and articulate some of the problems that your victim has in order to put it on paper, quantify for insurance carriers, quantify it for the court, and get it past motions so that it’s put in front of a jury and so that you can eventually make your client whole again.
