Here's a quick question from AskTheLawyers™. Do divorce lawyers in New York City offer a free consultation? We asked New York attorney Chaim Steinberger.

Chaim Steinberger:

So every divorce lawyer is different. For example, I offer a free telephone consultation. When you come into my office, typically that first meeting is what I call an initial strategy session. If you're at the beginning of the case, in other words, you're about to sue for divorce or you were just sued for divorce, that initial strategy session generally runs between two and three hours. That is often the most important meeting that we have, and it takes a significant amount of time, so I charge for the initial strategy session. I do not charge for the initial telephone consultation, because if I don't think I can help you, if it's a case I won't consider taking, if I'm not the right lawyer for the case, I don't want you to spend your time, your money, your energy to come in and see me. I don't want any of that. So very often, I end up spending more time on the telephone with people I know I can tell them I know I can help, then come on down to my office and we'll sit down. We'll work through it.
