This video features Erin Leake, a Family Law attorney based in Texas.
Erin Leake:
I grew up here in Austin, and this is where I went to school the whole way through and also high school.
I've been in family law since I was licensed to practice law, so about seven years now. Then my last year of law school, I had my student bar card and was also practicing family law for University of Houston. So I've been practicing family law for about eight years.
I enjoy family law because I enjoy getting to talk to my clients every day. I enjoy helping them through this life transition; it's difficult. I also enjoy going to court, which a lot of attorneys don't get to do anymore. Family law also touches a lot of different areas of law, and so we look at taxes, we look at child custody, we look at property, complicated property, and so you get to learn lots of different things.
I think it does require a special skill set to be a family lawyer. You have to understand that people are going to be at probably emotionally the worst that they have been in their lives, and you have to be very understanding and do things that maybe other lawyers don't have to do every day. We do a lot of talking to our clients on the phone, talking them through issues that might not even be legal issues, but they just need someone to talk to at that time.
